Reframe your negative thoughts and self-doubt

I have put together 7 simple, actionable steps to build a stronger and more positive mindset. Here are my steps;

Step 1 – Notice your self talk

If you are someone who is used to negative self-talk, you won’t be able to change this overnight.  BUT it is possible to change this internal dialogue – I know this because I have done it myself. The first step is self awareness. Set the intention to notice the way you speak to yourself today. Every time you notice that you are speaking to yourself negatively, criticising yourself, doubting yourself or being unkind to yourself, take a moment to pause and recognise this.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Step 2 – Positively reframe

You may have realised that negative self-talk can creep up easily! Thoughts create feelings. Feelings create actions. Actions create results.  Telling yourself ‘I’m so bad at this’ shapes your feelings about yourself and your abilities. This in turn shapes the actions you take and the results you achieve. When you notice your negative self-talk, stop and replace those negative messages with positive ones. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Some examples to help you;⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

‘I’m so bad at this’ becomes ‘Once I get more practice, I’ll be better at this’.

‘I’m so stupid, I shouldn’t have made that mistake’ becomes ‘I’m still learning, I did the best that I could at the time’.

‘I can’t do this, I don’t know how’ becomes ‘I have an opportunity to learn something new’⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Step 3 – Change the way you start your day

Starting the day in the right way can do wonders for your state of mind. Every day we have the choice to run our day or let our day run us. Introduce one small thing for yourself as part of your morning routine. This will ensure that your day begins in a positive manner. It doesn’t have to be dramatic- it just needs to be consistent.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The steps we take can be different for all of us. It can include 15 minutes of journaling, 20 minutes of yoga, or a walk with a podcast. It could also include making yourself a nice breakfast to sit down and enjoy without any distractions or waking up 15 mins earlier to have a cuppa on your own before the kids wake up! Do whatever works for YOU.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Step 4 – Develop an attitude of gratitude

Gratitude is one of the many positive emotions that uplift us. It’s about focusing on the good in our lives and being thankful for what we have. Gratitude helps us feel positive emotions, relish good experiences, improves our health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships. More importantly, expressing gratitude is free and can be done anytime anywhere.

Think about what you are grateful for today. Grab a piece of paper and a pen, and set a 1-minute timer on your clock. In the 60 seconds scribble down as many things that you are grateful for as you can.  At the end of the minute read back through your list and see how it makes you feel.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Step 5 – Check what you are consuming

It is vital to create strong boundaries around what you allow into your consciousness. You are in control of the information you consume. It is upon you to decide how much time you spend watching the news and what you look at on social media. ⠀

Check with yourself and review the information you are feeding yourself. Make sure you know how this information impacts you and your mindset.

Step 6 – Re-programme with affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotage. When you repeat them and believe in them, you will begin to see positive changes. This means coming up with sentences/phrases that will help you more towards progress. The trick with affirmations is to make sure you believe in them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Affirmations helped me when I first began public speaking. Even though I used to be well=aware of the topic I was covering, I still felt anxious and nervous about speaking in front of large crowds. Some affirmations I used to help myself were;⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

* I believe in myself and my abilities ⠀⠀⠀

* I am safe ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

* I am good enough to do this ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

* My words have a positive effect and will help people

* I am brave enough to help others ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Think of one positive affirmation for yourself and say it out loud to yourself.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Step 7 –  Question yourself

This is such a powerful tool for shifting your mindset. It is important to be solution-focused with your thinking and use your energy to focus on what you CAN do as opposed to what you CAN’T.

The key is to ask yourself the right questions, so the answers support you in a positive manner. Keep your questions positively charged and future-focused.

For example:

* How can I feel happier today?

* How can I achieve my goal?

* What can I do today to move forward?

Ask yourself one question that will help you move from where you are now to where you want to be.

I hope that these tips help you as much as they have helped me. I would love for you to connect with me and let me know how you get on.
